Objective To measure the thickness of knee and ankle cartilage and tendon in healthy northern Han population with ultrasound, and to propose the reference values. Methods Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) was used to measure the thickness of knee and ankle cartilage and tendon structures in 373 healthy people of Han nationality in north China, and the relevant factors were analyzed. Results The femoral condylar cartilage, talus cartilage, patellar ligament and Achilles tendon in males were thicker than those in females (all P<0.01). Age and body mass index (BMI) were all impact factors of plantar fascia thickening in women (all P<0.05),and BMI was the impact factor of Achilles tendon thickening in women (P<0.05). Age, BMI and exercise frequency were the impact factors of plantar fascia thickening in men (all P<0.05). BMI and exercise frequency were impact factors for Achilles tendon thickening in men (P<0.05). Low BMI was an impact factor of the lateral thickness of femoral condyle cartilage in men (P<0.05). Conclusion The reference ranges of thicknesses of knee and ankle cartilage and tendon measured with MSUS might provide a basis for identifying abnormalities and lesions. Gender, age and BMI influenced the thickness of femoral condylar cartilage, Achilles tendon and plantar fascia in healthy northern Han population.
