Objective To explore the age and gender related metabolism differences in different cerebral in healthy adults using 18F-FDG PET/CT. Methods Brain 18F-FDG PET/CT data of 769 healthy adults were retrospectively analyzed. The subjects were divided into ≤30 years old, 31-40 years old, 41-50 years old, 51-60 years old, 61-70 years oldand ≥71 years old group. The PET images of the brain was standarizated and the different regions of right and left including frontal lobe, temporal lobe, parietal lobe, cingulate gyrus, central area, occipital lobe, calcarine and surrounding cortex cerebellum, basal ganglia, medial temporal lobe and cerebellar were automatically outlined by Scenium software. The mean standardized uptake value (SUVmean) of each region were assessed and compared between males and females, as well as different age groups. Results No differences of SUVmean in bilateral central area, calcarine and surrounding cortex cerebellum (both P>0.05) and significant differences of SUVmean in the other regions (all P<0.05) were found between males and females. In both males and females, dominant regions on the left included frontal lobe, parietal lobe, cingulate gyrus, central area, calcarine and surrounding cortex cerebellum and cerebellum, dominant regions on the right included temporal lobe, occipital lobe and medial temporal lobe. The right basal ganglia was dominant in males while there was no different between right and left in females. SUVmean in all regions except for cerebellum decreased along with age, which was more obvious on the left. Conclusion There are age and gender related metabolism differences in different cerebral in healthy adults, and the metabolism shows asymmetrical reduction in right and left hemishere along with age.
