| Objective To evaluate the efficacy of different imaging modalities for visualization of unilateral small poorly functioning hypoplastic kidney associated with occult ectopic ureters in girls with paradoxical incontinence. Methods Between 1999 to 2005, 11 girls aging from 1.5 to 9 years old presented with paradoxical incontinence secondary doubtfully to small poorly functioning hypoplastic kidney were admitted to our hospital. The initial imaging evaluation included abdominal sonography in all 11 cases, computed tomography (CT) in 3, intravenous urography (IVU) in 9. Ultimately a 99Tcm-GH renal scintigraphy was performed in all 11 girls. We reviewed and compared the Results of different imaging modalities and clinic presentation of patients. Results IVU failed to visualize the affected kidneys in 9 cases and CT could not detect the affected kidneys in 3. Sonography could detect the small dysplastic kidney in only 1 patient (9.09%). 99Tcm-GH renal scintigraphy could detect the affected kidneys in all 11 cases (100%). Six cases underwent ureteronephrectomy of affected kidney. The ectopic ureter orifice was identified in vagina. Conclusion Considering patients' clinical features, 99Tcm-GH renal scintigraphy is an accurate and specific imaging modality for visualization of unilateral small poorly functioning hypoplastic kidney associated with occult ectopic ureters in girls with paradoxical incontinence. |
